Helpful information to detect fraud, forgery and counterfeiting. In the past the only defense against forgery was a wax impression placed on the fold of a document. In retrospect the penalties for forgery were severe. England " 5 Eliz.C. 15 ( 1563 ). If any person shall falsely forge, or make , or cause or assent to be falsely forged or made, any false deed, charter, or writing sealed...court-roll or will in writing ...and shall be convicted...he shall pay to the party aggrieved double costs and damages to be assessed by the court...and shall be set on the pillory. And there have his ears cut off, and his nostrils slit and cut, and seared with a hot iron: he shall also forfeit to the queen the profits of his lands during life imprisonment". The consequences of forgery today are minimal although forgery is the most wide spread of crimes and is growing at a higher rate than other crimes primarily due to the fact that many people are uninformed as to the tactics these criminals use. Today the penalty for forgery is a misdemeanor. It's as though society condones the act. Society even devised colorful names for forgers, such as vulcanizer and short story writer Identity theft is still a multiple crime, that is the perpetrator not only steals your material possession but more importantly they steal your identity as well. There are many "hi tech" products that are used to detect a fraudulent document and among the best are inks of different types, both covert and overt in nature. Covert inks are known to a few people within a specific organization, and overt inks are known by the general public. The key to detecting a fraudulent document is knowing what the specific function of the ink specified on the document does, how it reacts and how to identify them. The following list is of ink that needs no ( or little ) mechanical assistance for detection. The word "handwriting " is a misnomer. There is no such thing as "handwriting". Any stroke of the writing instrument begins in the brain. To simplify, handwriting is a graphic expression of ones thoughts. It is therefore "brain writing". Everyone can and does analyze handwriting on a daily basis, they just don't know that they are doing it. There are metaphysical practitioners of graphology and there are those who practice it as a science. In the scientific approach, physics plays an important role in the analyzing of handwriting. To best illustrate this let us look at one of the multitude of elements that are 100 %. As a writer is proceeding to the end of a page he decides to make a counter movement to the left. Rather than a round flowing graceful movement this is accomplished with an abrupt impulse that creates an angle at the point where the direction was altered. Now according to physics, in order to change direction using an angle formation, the initial direction of the writing instrument must come to a complete halt before the change can take place. This stopping and starting and stopping of the pen requires tremendous emotional energy, much more than a garland or arcade formation would require. The mere physical demands required for any angle would have to be implemented by a highly aggressive individual. Let us apply here angles as well as additional traits to two hypothetical writings and you decide. Imagine if you will, two scripts of writing. Scenario # 1 The first writing has an abundance of angles (aggression ), crude embellishments on capitals ( pretentious ), circle formations are crudely formed and filled with blotches and stenciling ( criminality ), the baseline is highly erratic ( unstable ) the pressure is unevenly distributed throughout several letters ( turmoil ) and the words are illegible ( concealment ). There are tremors in several areas of the writing ( uncertainty ). There are obvious false starts (caution ), many counter movements to the natural flow if the writing movement (concealment ), diacritics are carefully placed ( methodical ) , excessive retracing ( cover up ), heavy punctuation ( deception ) and the overall spacing suffers as the writing consumes the entire page (greed ) creating for the reader an irritable attempt at expression. Form level is low. Scenario # 2 The script is pleasing to the eye due to good use of general space ( organized ). Margins are balanced and the letters are connected with soft garlands ( control ). All the letters show divergence from copy book ( an indication of maturity). Although there is a tendency to obscure several of the final words or letters ( indicating speed and a quick mind ) the writing impulse reveals additional indicators of great speed ( unpretentious ). There are no false starts ( honesty ) as the writer "gets down to business". There are no signs of ostentation ( sincerity ). Movement is rapid and the rhythm is fluid ( control and direction ). The writing, pen and grip pressure is evenly distributed throughout the text ( balance ). The expression is clearly individualized ( maturity ). Form level is high. QUESTION? There are many people who think that they can imitate another's writing. Not so . The task is an impossibility. Why ? To begin with, let us take a look at the handwriting process and what is entailed. Handwriting is a subconscious action. There are many entities that have to be contended with on a subconscious level and with simultaneous effort. The following is a list of the factors the act of writing demands. The writing process and what the forger must contend with. Development of the graphic faculty ( writing movement ) consists of no less than 72 conditions or elements. A. 12 causes responsible for the individual formation of letters. B. 8 laws that allow one to write fluently. C. 10 doctrines of handwriting. D. 9 phenomena of handwriting. E. 3 types of speed. F. 29 indicators of speed or lack of. G. 2 subordinate indicators. H. 2 emotional conditions that will diminish or destroy the handwriting impulse. I. 3 physical conditions that will diminish or destroy the handwriting impulse. Included as well, the writer or forger must pay attention SIMULTANEOUSLY ( and subconsciously ) to : J. Line Quality K. Pressure pattern L. Slant / Direction M. Size / proportion N. Baseline O. Method of construction P. Initial letter forms Q. Medical letter forms R. Terminal letter forms S. Connectives T. Content In addition to the above there are seven (7) factors that cooperate in a subordinate fashion as well as eight (8) mandatory conditions for fluent "MATURE" writing. Not only would the forger have to adopt the personality of the intended victim but he would have to divest himself of all of his own traits as well....an impossibility. 6 Conclusive indicators of forgery are : 1. Slowness of execution 2. Touching up 3. Change of hold ( pressure ) 4. Wavering (tremors) 5. Uncertain interrupted strokes 6. Marked variation of angles CAUTION; There is a possibility that all six of these conditions can be found in the writing of one with severe illness. Ans: Yes, a writing that was done in pencil will appear different to the untrained eye due to the fact that when a person writes in pencil SUBCONCIOUSLY the writer will exert a lot of pressure in order to wear the graphite down. Although the writing will appear different ( picture value ) it will still contain all of the individual traits used for identification purposes. |
